Gather Ye Rosebuds edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed this novel. I like the author's wit and twisting plots. Her servants are strong and well drawn personalities, and the primary characters are multi-dimensional and likable. This author writes pretty much non-sexual romances. After years of reading them, I will take a well written regency over a bodice ripper depending on formulaic sex any day.
Joan Smith wrote Regency romance novels as far back in time as 1977. I have never read a Joan Smith romance that I did not enjoy. Like Georgette Heyer, her books are all keepers. Somehow, I have misplaced my copy so I am buying a new one.
Zoe, who in Regency times is old enough to be considered a spinster, lives with her widowed mother on a small estate next to the large estate of Lord Weylin, whose family is extremely wealthy and extremely snobbish.
Zoe is an artist. She decides that the tower room where her maternal Irish uncle used to live will be perfect as a studio for her. While clearing out the room to prepare it for painting, she finds a necklace, one that she recognizes as belonging to Lord Weylin's family. How did her uncle come to have this necklace? There is only one thing to do, she must visit Lord Weylin's mother (a very indolent woman who dotes on her obnoxious dog) and stash the necklace somewhere to be found by Lord Weylin's family later.
When she arrives for her visit, Lord Weylin happens to be home. He is very suspicious by this sudden visit from a neighbor he hardly knows (he hardly knows any of his neighbors, most are so far below him socially).
He catches Zoe in the room where he keeps his collection of valuable Chinese vases (she is thinking of dropping the necklace in a vase). He thinks she is trying to steal one of his vases and demands to see what she is hiding behind her back. He too recognizes the necklace which has been missing from his family for a long time.
The mystery of how Zoe's uncle came to possess the necklace intrigues both Zoe and Lord Weylin (for different reasons). Both proceed, at first independently, to investigate the history of the necklace and discover the truth. There are some hilarious scenes during the hunt to track down how her uncle came to possess the necklace.
The main characters, Zoe and Lord Weylin, are drawn well as they always are in Joan Smith's romance novels. Zoe is charming from page 1. The reader, along with Zoe, learns to like Lord Weylin very well (who starts out quite dislikeable). The supporting characters in the plot are well drawn and amusing too, especially Zoe's mother and her housekeeper.
One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Lord Weylin asks Zoe to meet him in her family's rose garden. Zoe dresses carefully, eagerly anticipating this romantic night meeting under the stars. When Lord Weylin arrives by horse and sits on the bench with her, she thinks he might kiss her -- instead he starts smelling his jacket to see if he smells of horse sweat. The repartee between Zoe and Lord Weylin throughout the novel is delightful.
I read all of Joan Smith's books years ago. Now, scrounging for more Regencies (publishers, take note, we need more) I remembered Joan's books and decided to read them again. Nor was I disappointed. This book is just as enjoyable as I remembered. Joan's forte is her sense of humor. The interactions of the hero and heroine and their repartee are very amusing. In addition, the plot is not just a rehash of tired plots, but is refreshingly original. Joan's books are not long and are not slowed down by boring sex scenes. Courting couples in this period did not jump in bed at the drop of a hat, so Joan's books are much more authentic in the regard than books written by current authors.
If you're looking for a really fun, light Regency, this is the place to come.
Zoie a young woman on the brink of spinsterhood from a well to do country family has decided her love of painting is a good substitute for love. While cleaning out her deceased Uncles bedroom she discovers a diamond necklace that was reported stolen years ago. How her uncle gained possession of the necklace and how she would return it to it's rightful owner and find love along the way is the heart of this story.
All the players are in place for what should have been a delightful little Regency romp but instead surprisingly turned into a very boring read. Top-lofty Lord Weylin, his mother the typical over feed and over indulged Lady of the manor more concerned about her pug dog than the average person. Zoie the sensible daughter and protector of her gentle mother, a mother that refused to deal with any unpleasant situations. And the servants, an Irish drama queen housekeeper and a thieving scoundrel of a butler. I absolutely adore Joan Smith RR's but this book is not an example of her excellent writing ability. The mystery regarding the necklace became drawn out and bogged down with the side story of Zoie's Uncle Barry and Weylin's Aunt Margaret. There was a lot of blind leading the blind in solving what I considered a weak scenario. The witty and snappy banter between Zoie and Weylin was a bit flat, and granted there are only 204 pages there was no gradual build up to Z and W falling in love. They share one kiss in the garden and BAM! love is in the air when up to that point they acted as if they did not trust or like each other. There were brief moments of JS signature humor when Weylin thought Zoie was trying to steal one of his Ming vases and the housekeeper provided hilarious moments, but that was not enough to lift this book up from an ok read to a great read.
